The Mathematical Formula

Total Area = Length × Width
Tile Area = Tile Length × Tile Width
Base Tiles = Total Area / Tile Area
Total Tiles = Base Tiles + (Base Tiles × Wastage %)
Total Boxes = Math.ceil(Total Tiles / Tiles Per Box)

Example Calculation

Let's say you have a room that is 10 feet by 12 feet. The total area is 120 sq ft.
If you are using 2x2 ft tiles (4 sq ft each), you divide 120 by 4, which equals 30 tiles.
Add 10% for wastage (3 tiles), and your final total is 33 tiles. If they come in boxes of 4, you will need to purchase 9 boxes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much wastage should I add?

The industry standard is 10%. However, if your room has many corners, diagonal layouts, or complex patterns, you should increase this to 15%.

Why do I need to calculate by boxes?

Tiles are almost always sold in full boxes to prevent damage during shipping. Retailers usually will not sell loose tiles.

Is this calculator free?
